Papermaking from Sea to Shore

Linda McCausland is Artisans on Main's resident papermaker. She will bring to you, a series of Sunday adventures in papermaking.. both her own experiences in the studio as well as views of contemporary artists using paper as their medium.

"Papermaking is an ancient process first devised in China more than 2,000 years ago. It was a coveted, secret process that did not leave China until 700AD, when it traveled down the Silk Road to middle East. The first paper mill in North America was not built until 1690. That seems a long time ago, but if you think about our world NOT having much paper until 1690, then it is a relatively new and world altering event here. Well maybe a little boring, but we have to start somewhere! Next week, the Process of Papermaking.
